Water and Spirit

Jesus expected Nicodemus to understand being born of water and Spirit because it follows a foundational pattern throughout scripture. In the Creation account, Noah's flood, and the Red Sea crossing, God consistently used water and wind—or Spirit—to bring judgment, rescue His people, and establish a covenant. Under the new covenant in Christ, God continues using water and the Holy Spirit to bring spiritual rebirth and salvation.
